South Korea's Daewoo to build ship plant in North Korea

SEOUL, Oct 5, 2007 (AFP) - South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said Friday it would build a shipbuilding plant in North Korea as part of joint economic projects agreed at this week's inter-Korean summit.

At their summit, South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il decided to build shipbuilding complexes in the North's western port of Nampo and Anbyon on the east coast.

Daewoo plans to build world's largest floating dock

SEOUL, Aug 27, 2007 (AFP) - South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said Monday it plans to build the world's biggest floating dock to meet growing demand for large container ships.

The world's third largest shipyard intends by June 2009 to build the new dock which could produce six or seven container vessels per year, said spokesman Yoon Yo-Han.

'We plan to build the world's largest floating dock due to a surge in orders,' he told AFP, adding the projct is awaiting approval from the company's board.

Daewoo says it finds record gas reserves in Myanmar

SEOUL, Aug 23, 2007 (AFP) - Three offshore natural gasfields in Myanmar hold the largest reserves to be discovered in that country, South Korea's Daewoo International said Thursday.

The blocks in the Bay of Bengal near the border with Bangladesh have been certified to hold up to 219.2 billion cubic meters (7.7 trillion cubic feet) of exploitable gas, Daewoo International said.

A spokesman told AFP the size of the reserves is a record for Myanmar and had been certified by international consultants Gaffney, Cline and Associates.
