Timeline history of the two Koreas

SEOUL, Oct 2, 2007 (AFP) - South and North Korea Tuesday began a three-day summit in Pyongyang, only the second in their history.

Here are major developments since the peninsula was divided:

Aug 15, 1945: Japan surrenders in World War II and ends its colonial rule over Korea which began in 1910. The United States and Soviet Union agree to divide the peninsula into separate spheres of influence.

Aug 15, 1948: South Korea formally established.

Sep 9, 1948: North Korea established.
