LONDON, Sept 21, 2007 (AFP) - Nearly 600 people die in custody in England and Wales each year with a large number from suicides and homicides, a lobby group said Friday.
The Forum for Preventing Deaths in Custody said there were 523 deaths in prisons, youth jails, immigration centres, secure accommodation and mental hospitals in the period 2006-7. The figure does not include deaths in police cells.
CHICAGO, Aug 10, 2007 (AFP) - Three people were killed in an accident Friday morning at a mine in the US state of Indiana, authorities said.
There was no immediate cause given for the accident at the Gibson County mine which occurred around 11 am (1700 GMT).
The men, who were working for a contractor on the site, were killed in a new 500-foot deep vertical mine shaft which was under construction.
They fell from a muck bucket being used to dig the shaft, the Mine Health and Safety Administration said in a statement.
