Ugandan court annuls law on police permit for demonstrations

A Ugandan court has annulled a law that required protesters to get written police permission before demonstrating, saying it infringed upon constitutional rights.

A five-member Constitutional Court panel ruled Tuesday that the law was repressive since it barred Ugandans from enjoying their fundamental right to freedom of assembly and association.

Hundreds demonstrate against Tibet crackdown

LONDON, March 22, 2008 (AFP) - Hundreds of people marched in various cities on Saturday to call for an end to China's crackdown on protests in Tibet, with some urging a boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

In London demonstrators paused outside the Chinese embassy to sing Tibetan songs and chant 'Chinese out' and 'Long live the Dalai Lama', many angrily waving their fists.

Kenyan opposition says ready to cancel rallies

NAIROBI, Jan 23, 2008 (AFP) - Kenya's opposition said Wednesday said it would consider calling off planned protests if chief mediator Kofi Annan asked them to.

'We are meeting Mr Kofi Annan at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT). If he asks us to call off the rallies, we shall give it a very serious consideration,' Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) spokesman Salim Lone told AFP.
