BAGHDAD, Oct 17, 2007 (AFP) - A roadside bomb killed seven Iraqi police near the city of Diwaniyah, south of Baghdad, on Wednesday, military officials said.
One officer was among those killed when the police vehicle was hit by the blast on the main road between Diwaniyah and the town of Afak to the east, the officials said.
The explosion happened shortly after midnight (2100 GMT Tuesday) when the patrol was on its way to Afak police station, which had come under earlier attack.

NAJAF, Iraq, Aug 12, 2007 (AFP) - Hundreds of mourners turned out to bury an assassinated provincial Shiite governor and police chief on Sunday, as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered an investigation into their killings.
Iraqi police and soldiers tightly guarded the centre of the holy Shiite city of Najaf, where the governor and police chief of the neighbouring province of Qadisiyah were to be buried one day after their deaths, an AFP reporter said.
BAGHDAD, Aug 12, 2007 (AFP) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Sunday ordered an investigation into the assassinations of a provincial governor and police chief who were killed on Saturday in a bomb attack in the Shiite south.
'It is with sadness that we learnt of the martyrdom of the governor of Diwaniyah, Khalil Jalil Hamza, the police chief Khalid Hassan, and their guards from an explosive device,' the premier's office said in a statement.
