ARANJUEZ, August 2, 2008 (AFP) - A former ETA member guilty of 25 murders was released from a Spanish jail Saturday, as the armed Basque separatist group marked its 40 anniversary.

Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos served 20 years of an original 3,000 year sentence for the killings, which came in a string of 11 attacks.

ETA weakened but still active 40 years after first planned killing

MADRID, August 2, 2008 (AFP) - On August 2, 1968, ETA staged its first planned killing when it shot a police officer. Forty years, and more than 800 deaths, later the Basque separatist organisation appears weakened, but still remains dangerous.

In that summer of 1968, three ETA members ambushed Meliton Manzanas outside his home in the Basque city of San Sebastian.

ETA blamed as small bomb goes off on Spanish beach

TORREMOLINOS, July 29, 2008 (AFP) - A small bomb exploded on a beach in the popular southern Spanish resort town of Torremolinos early Tuesday in an attack blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA.

No-one was injured by the device which went off without warning.

Bomb explodes in Spain's Basque region: official

MADRID, July 28, 2008 (AFP) - A small bomb placed by the separatist group ETA went off overnight at a highway building site in Spain's northern Basque region, a Basque interior ministry spokeswoman said Monday.

The explosion on the A-8 highway near the town of Orio caused no injuries but damaged four vehicles and six shacks used by work crews, she added.
