Cyprus FA happy over FIFA recognition

NICOSIA, Sept 21, 2007 (AFP) - The Cyprus Football Association is satisfied that world governing body FIFA ruled it was the only group to regulate the sport on the island despite Turkish Cypriots seeking separate recognition, officials said on Friday.

CFA and Turkish Cypriot officials held talks with both FIFA and European body UEFA in Zurich on Thursday in a bid to find a way around the political deadlock on the divided eastern Mediterranean island.

Blatter hands out humanist award in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Sept 20, 2007 (AFP) - FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Thursday presented in Bosnia the International Humanist of the Century award to four former and current regional leaders.

Blatter presented the award by the International League of Humanists to respective former presidents of Macedonia and Slovenia, Kiro Gligorov and Milan Kucan and current Croatian President Stipe Mesic.

Former president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel was also almong the award winners, but was not in Sarajevo to collect it.

S.Africa on guard against 2010 World Cup electricity outages

JOHANNESBURG, Aug 16, 2007 (AFP) - The South African government said Thursday it was on guard against major electricity outages normally experienced during its winter months when the FIFA World Cup kicks off in 2010.

World Cup 2010 government unit director-general Joe Phaahla said they were concerned about the weak supply of power especially during June and July which it was feared could disrupt the first World Cup to be held in Africa.

'We will not want to see blackouts during the tournament,' Phaahla told reporters in Johannesburg.

Football: FIFA recommend West Ham take Tevez dispute to CAS

PARIS, July 24, 2007 (AFP) - World football`s governing body FIFA on Tuesday recommended the English Football Association (FA) and the Premier League advise West Ham to take the Tevez transfer dispute to the Court of Abritration for Sport.

'It is not a matter of refusing to arbitrate but a recommendation in the interest of all parties involved in the complicated affair,' explained a FIFA spokesman to AFP on Tuesday.

'We believe that it is the quickest manner in which to sort out the deadlock.'

Football: FIFA meet with FA and Premier league over Tevez affair

PARIS, July 23, 2007 (AFP) - World football`s governing body FIFA on Monday met with representatives of the Football Association (FA) and the Premier League to discuss the transfer of Argentina striker Carlos Tevez from West Ham to Manchester United.

Following a meeting that lasted just over two-and-a-half hours, FIFA announced that a decision would be delivered during the week.
