Dubai Aerospace orders GE engines for Boeing fleet

DUBAI, Nov 17, 2007 (AFP) - Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) has ordered engines valued at more than 770 million dollars from US conglomerate General Electric to fit 15 Boeing planes, the company said on Saturday.

A statement said the deal involves the GE90-115B engine to power 10 Boeing 777-300s and five GEnx to equip Boeing 747-8 freighters.

The deal was announced two days after the closure of the Dubai air show, during which European and American manufacturers reaped record orders for new aircraft.

GE addresses Indian concerns over mass girl abortions

NEW DELHI, Sept 29, 2007 (AFP) - US giant General Electric's healthcare unit, accused of helping fuel female abortions in India by pushing sales of ultrasound equipment, has said it will take steps to try to combat the problem.

GE Healthcare commands nearly 50 percent of the multi-million-dollar Indian market for ultrasound machines.

The machines are used widely to find out the gender of an unborn baby, even though the practice is banned under Indian law.

GE plans to move some operations to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27, 2007 (AFP) - General Electric plans to move some of its operations to a special economic region being developed in Malaysia's southern Johor state, company officials said Thursday.

Stuart Dean, president of the conglomerate's GE International Inc. unit, said the move was tied to plans by a major customer to relocate to Nusajaya City in the Iskandar Development Region.

'We will follow one of our major customers who may invest in Nusajaya and support them there, so that business has to be relocated here,' he told reporters.

GE to book 950 mln dlr loss on mortgage unit

NEW YORK, Sept 19, 2007 (AFP) - General Electric expects to report a 950 million-dollar loss for the first nine months of 2007 at its subprime mortgage unit that it plans to close, a spokesman for the conglomerate said Wednesday.

GE, one of the world's largest companies, announced recently that it intended to withdraw from the mortgage lending sector by progressively winding down its WMC Mortgage unit.

The decision came amid tightening credit amid a housing slump and problems in the subprime mortgage sector, where loans are given to people with patchy credit histories.

US giant GE to acquire Czech aero engine company

PRAGUE, Aug 27, 2007 (AFP) - The US multinational General Electric has agreed to acquire the Czech turboprop engine company Walter Engines for an undisclosed sum, the Prague-based company announced on Monday.

'Walter Engines will broaden GE's capabilities in the small turboprop segment of aviation,' the president and chief executive of General Electric's aviation unit, Scott Donnelly, said in a statement that was also released in the United States.

GE to buy Czech aircraft engine maker

NEW YORK, Aug 27, 2007 (AFP) - General Electric Company, the giant US conglomerate, said Monday it had agreed to buy Prague-based Walter Engines a.s., a manufacturer of aircraft engines.

GE did not disclose how much it was paying to take over the Czech company which makes turboprop aircraft engines and manufactures aircraft parts.

'Walter Engines has a strong heritage and an outstanding customer base. GE seeks to expand upon Walter's capabilities as we look forward to operating a growth business in the Czech Republic,' GE said.

EU okays Saudi Sabic's bid for GE Plastics

BRUSSELS, Aug 3, 2007 (AFP) - EU regulators on Friday approved the acquisition of GE Plastics of the United States by the Saudi group SABIC, saying the deal would not significantly impact competition in Europe.

The European Commission found that 'the product portfolios of both companies are largely complementary, SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation) focusing on raw materials and commodity plastics, GE Plastics being rather specialised in more refined types of plastics, notably so-called 'engineering plastics'.'
