Football: Portugal see off Georgians

VISEU, May 31, 2008 (AFP) - Portugal warmed up for Euro 2008 with a 2-0 home win in Viseu on Saturday over Georgia courtesy of first half goals from Joao Moutinho and Simao Sabrosa.

Moutinho broke the dedalock on 19 minutes and Simao settled matters with a penalty kick a minute before the break as the hosts swept aside their rivals with ease.

Rugby Union: Laharrague, Shvelidze join Montauban

MONTAUBAN, France, April 5, 2008 (AFP) - France international back Julien Laharrague, who joined English club Sale in February 2007, has signed a two-year contract with French Top 14 rugby club Montauban.

Before heading for England the 29-year-old previously played for French clubs Tarbes, Beziers, Agen, Dax, Brive and Perpignan.

Football: Georgia sack Topmoller

TBILISI, April 2, 2008 (AFP) - The Georgian Football Federation has decided to sack the country's national coach Klaus Topmoller of Germany, the federation press service reported Wednesday.

Federation chief Nodar Akhalkatsi said that the federation had finalised the details of the cancellation of the contract in agreement with Topmoller.

Football: Scots deserve praise despite Georgia defeat: McLeish

TBLISI, Oct 18, 2007 (AFP) - Scotland manager Alex McLeish believes his team are due 'tremendous credit' despite their disappointing defeat in Georgia on Wednesday evening.

The Scots lost 2-0 in their penultimate Euro 2008 Group B qualifier to leave them needing a victory against World Champions Italy at Hampden on November 17 to qualify for next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

But McLeish feels the country's international football squad have already exceeded all expectations in keeping their qualifying dreams alive until their final match.

Goals from 17-year-old Levan Mchedlidze, who is at Italian Serie A side FC Empoli, and David Siradze in either half handed the hosts a deserved victory.

The result means Scotland must now win their final Group B match against World Cup winners Italy at Hampden on November 17 to qualify for the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer.
