Six more hurricanes expected this year: experts

MIAMI, Sept 4, 2007 (AFP) - As Hurricane Felix slammed into Central America at maximum intensity on Tuesday, top US experts predicted six more hurricanes would form in the Atlantic region this year, three of them packing 'major' strength.

'We expect the remainder of the season to be active,' said Phil Klotzbach, the lead author of a report by the Colorado State University's hurricane forecast team.

Atlantic hurricane season will be above-normal: experts

MIAMI, Aug 9, 2007 (AFP) - Forecasters on Thursday warned residents in hurricane-prone areas not to be lulled by the past months' weak cyclonic activity in the Atlantic, warning as many as nine storms could develop into hurricanes this year.

While the predictions are slightly down from earlier forecasts, the six-month Atlantic season that started June 1 will remain well above-average, according to the US government's Climate Prediction Center.

Experts revise forecast downward to eight hurricanes

MIAMI, Aug 3, 2007 (AFP) - Eight hurricanes are likely to form in the Atlantic this year, with four expected to reach intense strength, experts said Friday in a downward revision of earlier forecasts.

The forecast also said there is a 68 percent chance of an intense hurricane slamming ashore in the United States this year.

In all, 15 named storms are expected to form in the Atlantic Basin, according to prominent experts William Gray and Philip Klotzbach, of Colorado State University.

Global warming doubles number of hurricanes, study finds

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2007 (AFP) - Global warming's effect on wind patterns and sea temperatures have more than doubled the annual number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean over the past century, says a new study by US scientists.

Excerpts from the study by Greg Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Peter Webster of Georgia Institute of Technology were released in the United States late Sunday.
