The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) authorised eBay to buy a 36 percent stake in Gmarket from Interpark Corp and Interpark chairman Lee Ki-Hyung, a spokesman for the anti-trust watchdog said.

BEIJING, September 10, 2008 (AFP) - Foreign direct investment into China rose 41.6 percent in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period last year, the government said Wednesday.

Foreign companies invested 67.7 billion dollars in China in the period from January to August, the commerce ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.

World Bank pulls out of Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline project

WASHINGTON, September 9, 2008 (AFP) - The World Bank said Tuesday it has withdrawn financing of a Chad-Cameroon pipeline because the Chadian government failed to honor an agreement to use some oil revenues for poverty reduction.

The Chadian government 'fully' prepaid the loan as of September 5, the development lender said in a statement.

Barclays says to invest 35 mln dlrs in Chinese finance company

LONDON, August 27, 2008 (AFP) - British bank Barclays said on Wednesday that it had won regulatory approval for a minority investment worth 35 million dollars (24 million euros) in New China Trust Co. Ltd (NCT).

Barclays added in a statement that it expected to acquire a 19.5 percent stake in cash via its investment banking unit Barclays Capital by the end of November.

Italy sets up new company to relaunch Alitalia: report

MILAN, August 26, 2008 (AFP) - A new company has been formed which will oversee the relaunch of Italy's near-bankrupt flag carrier Alitalia, the Radiocor news agency reported Tuesday, citing financial sources.

The new company will be called the Italian Air Company, Radiocor said, and will be headed by Roberto Colaninno, the boss of iconic scooter maker Piaggio.

Continental announces purchase of Turkish tyre firm

FRANKFURT, July 22, 2008 (AFP) - The German auto parts group Continental has bought 89.66 percent of Oltas SPA, a Turkish distributor of passenger and commercial vehicle tyres, Continental said on Tuesday.

Continental did not say how much it would pay for the holding, but reported that Istanbul-based Oltas had sales last year of 39.5 billion dollars (24.8 billion euros).

German power group EON unveils Russian investment

FRANKFURT, July 22, 2008 (AFP) - The biggest German power company, EON, is set to invest 800 million euros (1.3 billion dollars) in a Siberian power plant that would become one of the biggest in the world, the company said on Tuesday.

EON's investment in gas turbines would add 800 megawatts (MW) of capacity to its Surgutskaya GRES-2 plant, a statement said.

EON and Dong will own the world's biggest offshore installation equally, the statement said, without providing financial details.
