India's Jet Airways sheds hundreds of jobs

India`s largest private-sector carrier Jet Airways said Wednesday it was laying off 1,900 employees because of the economic slowdown and soaring costs.

The move comes just two days after the firm entered into a working alliance with its main rival, Kingfisher Airlines, to battle slowing growth and high fuel prices.

EU clears Thomas Cook purchase of Jet Tours

BRUSSELS, August 4, 2008 (AFP) - EU regulators on Monday approved Europe's second largest travel firm Thomas Cook's takeover of smaller French rival Jet Tours.

The European Commission announced that it had given the deal its blessing via a 'simplified' vetting process used for acquisitions not seen as posing any competition problems.
