Jordan in secret talks with Hamas: Islamist

AMMAN, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - Jordan's intelligence chief Mohammed Dahabi and Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal held secret talks in Amman last month, a leading Islamist said on Wednesday.

'Dahabi and (Syria-based) Nazzal met for talks in Amman two weeks ago,' Zaki Bani Rsheid, secretary general of the key opposition Islamic Action Front (IAF) party, told AFP.

10 Jordanians jailed for plot to join Iraq insurgency

AMMAN, August 4, 2008 (AFP) - Jordan's state security court on Monday jailed 10 men for plotting to join the anti-US insurgency in neighbouring Iraq.

The military tribunal sentenced eight of them to two-and-a-half years in prison and two who are still on the run to five years. All 10 are Jordanian.

They can appeal within 30 days.

Jordan jails two football fans for burning flag

AMMAN, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Jordan's military court on Sunday jailed two football fans of Palestinian origin for burning the kingdom's flag while celebrating their team's April victory in the country's premier league.

The pair, who were not named, were each sentenced to one year in jail and ordered to pay a 100-dinar fine (around 140 dollars), a judicial official said.

Jordanian charged after sister shot in suspected 'honour' killing

AMMAN, August 1, 2008 (AFP) - A 26-year-old Jordanian man was charged with murder on Friday after his 23-year-old sister was shot dead in an apparent 'honour' killing, a security official said.

The unnamed suspect allegedly shot his sister six times on Thursday night in the Nqeira area south of the capital Amman, the official told AFP.

Philippines lifts Jordan labour ban: official

MANILA, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - The Philippines has lifted a ban on sending workers to Jordan but imposed conditions to minimise abuse of domestic helpers, Labour Secretary Marianito Roque said Thursday.

Roque said the ban would be lifted to allow Filipino domestic helpers to return to Jordan on the condition employers pay a minimum basic salary of 400 US dollars a month.
