WASHINGTON, Oct 12, 2007 (AFP) - Veteran Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy underwent surgery Friday to unblock his carotid artery, his office said.
The blockage was picked up during a routine examination of Kennedy's back and spine, and the procedure, carried out in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was preventative and non-invasive, a Kennedy aide said.
Kennedy, 75, will have a 'very brief' recovery period before returning to work, his office said in a statement.
Carotid arteries are located in the neck and carry blood to the brain.
