Olympics: I am done with heptathlon, says Olympic champion Kluft

BERLIN, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - Olympic champion Caroline Kluft insisted in a magazine here on Thursday she is finished with the heptathlon as she prepares to concentrate on the long-jump and triple-jump in Beijing.

The 25-year-old announced in March she would not be competing in the seven-discipline event at the Beijing Olympic Games having won the gold medal in Athens.

STOCKHOLM, Feb 22, 2008 (AFP) - Sweden's Carolina Kluft, the current Olympic, world (three-time) and European (twice) heptathlon champion, has pulled out of next month's world indoor championships because of injury.

'Unfortunately, she will not be at the (March 7-9) world championships in Valencia, Spain,' Swedish athletics federation doctor Sverker Nilsson told AFP.

OSAKA, Japan, Aug 27, 2007 (AFP) - Rejoicing in an unprecedented third world heptathlon crown and a long-awaited new personal record, Carolina Kluft says she is not yet ready to abdicate as queen of athletes.

'To break my personal record and to win. It was my best motivation source,' the 24-year-old Swedish golden girl said after comfortably winning the grueling seven-sport spectacle at the World Athletics Championships here on Sunday.

'And right now I feel kind of empty,' she said. 'But right now I'm just happy and I'm not thinking about the future.'

OSAKA, Japan, Aug 22, 2007 (AFP) - Sweden's Olympic and world heptathlon gold medallist Carolina Kluft is hoping that the 2007 world championships will be the beginning of a perfect end to her reign.

She even hinted Osaka would be her last heptathlon, in which she has remained unbeaten since 2000, despite her earlier plan to quit the seven-sport spectacle after the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and compete in single events.
