Rice leaves Moscow after talks on missile defence, other disputes

MOSCOW, Oct 14, 2007 (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left Moscow early Sunday after talks with Russian leadership on missile defence, Iranian nuclear problem and other issues that had recently chilled ties between Moscow and Washington.

Rice and US Defence Secretary Robert Gates held talks with President Vladimir Putin and then a combined meeting with their respective Russian counterparts, Sergei Lavrov and Anatoly Serdyukov.

Madeleine's parents catch plane to Britain

FARO, Portugal, Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann on Sunday boarded a flight back to Britain, two days after being named as suspects by Portuguese police, Portuguese television reported.

Gerry and Kate McCann insisted they played no part in the disappearance of their daughter in a statement as they left Faro airport in southern Portugal.

The plane, which took off at 9:40 am (0840 GMT), was due to land at East Midlands Airport near their home in Leicestershire, central England, around 12:20 pm local time (1120 GMT).

McCanns leave for airport to return to Britain

PRAIA DA LUZ, Portugal, Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - The parents of Madeleine McCann, the missing British toddler, left the villa where they have been staying in Praia da Luz in southern Portugal on Sunday for Faro airport to take a plane back to Britain.

Gerry and Kate McCann had been thought to have put plans to go home to Britain on hold after being named as suspects by police Friday.

Their daughter Madeleine, who would now be aged four, disappeared from their holiday apartment in the resort on May 3 as her parents ate an evening meal with friends nearby.

McCanns will return to Britain from Portugal within hours: reports

LONDON, Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - The parents of Madeleine McCann, the missing British toddler, will leave Portugal to return home later Sunday, Britain's BBC and Sky television reported, quoting unnamed sources close to the family.

Gerry and Kate McCann were thought to have put plans to return to Britain from Praia da Luz, on the Algarve in Portugal, on hold after being named as suspects by police Friday.

Planned Parenthood official calls for 'paternity leave' in Nigeria

LAGOS, July 31, 2007 (AFP) - The head of an international birth control agency in Nigeria has called for four weeks of paternity leave for new fathers, the official news agency NAN said Tuesday.

The NAN quoted Hannatu Ibrahim, chairman of The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) in the Africa region, as saying the 'paternity leave' would enable husbands to assist their wives in nurturing their newborns.

'After birth, a woman needs her husband's support because at that time she is weak,' said Ibrahim.

Cleared Indian doctor can leave Australia: minister

SYDNEY, July 28, 2007 (AFP) - An Indian doctor cleared of involvement in failed British car bombings will be allowed to leave Australia but his visa will not be restored, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said Saturday.

Andrews said lawyers for Mohamed Haneef sought permission to leave Australia when he was released from custody Friday after a terrorism charge against him was withdrawn and prosecutors admitted mistakes in the case.

'I have indicated that the Commonwealth has no objection to Dr. Haneef leaving Australia,' Andrews told reporters.
