Russia bans beef from two Brazilian states: safety agency

MOSCOW, July 2, 2008 (AFP) - Russia has temporarily banned beef imports from two Brazilian states due to an outbreak of disease, the Russian food safety agency Rosselkhoznadzor said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the agency said the ban applied to meat and livestock imports from the states of Goias and Pernambuco and was prompted by an outbreak of vesicular stomatitis.

Colombia reports foot and mouth outbreak at Venezuela border

BOGOTA, June 4, 2008 (AFP) - Colombian health authorities reported Tuesday an outbreak of foot and mouth disease among livestock near the border with Venezuela.

The Colombian Farming Institute (ICA) said 29 animals were found to be infected with the disease on a ranch outside northeastern Cucuta, some four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Venezuelan border.
