Iraqi forces can control restive north: US general

Iraqi forces are ready to take security control of the north of the war-torn country, one of the last bastions of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, US military General Tony Thomas told AFP.

`I think they are ready now, if needed,` Thomas said in an interview at the Marez US base on the outskirts of the northern city of Mosul.

US troops seize six suspected rebels in Mosul

BAGHDAD, Oct 13, 2008 (AFP) - The US military said it had detained on Monday six suspected insurgents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the scene of some of the worst violence against Christians in five years.

It said in a statement that three of those seized during operations in the city are believed to have links to foreign insurgency groups.

BAGHDAD, Oct 12, 2008 (AFP) - At least five Iraqis, mostly children, were killed and 35 wounded on Sunday in two suicide car bomb attacks targeted at American and Iraqi soldiers, the US military said.

'In the first suicide car bomb, the one targeting coalition forces but with no coalition casualties, we have five killed and 10 wounded,' US army spokesman Staff Sergeant Sam Smith said.

MOSUL, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - Three police officers were killed and four others wounded on Thursday when a suicide bomber tried to ram his car into a police station in northern Iraq, police said.

The attack occurred in the small town of Al-Geyar, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the violence-ridden northern city of Mosul, police captain Ayhmed al-Jiburi said.
