Hundreds in Spain protest Nissan job cuts

Hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the offices of Japanese automaker Nissan in the northeastern city of Barcelona on Tuesday to protest its plan to cut 1,680 jobs in Spain.

Some threw eggs, publicity hoardings and other objects at the building as the demonstrators blocked the city's Gran Via avenue for about one hour.

Nissan axes jobs as profits slump

Japan`s Nissan Motor Co. said Friday it was axing 3,500 jobs worldwide and cut its full-year forecasts by two-thirds as the global economic crisis shakes the auto industry.

Japan`s third largest automaker, which is controlled by France`s Renault, said that profits for the first half slumped by 40.5 percent on a sharp slowdown in the key US market and the soaring value of the yen.

Nissan posts 40.5 percent drop in half-year profits

Japan`s Nissan Motor Co. reported Friday a 40.5 percent slump in half-year net profits and predicted annual earnings would plunge by two-thirds due to weak global markets and a strong yen.

Nissan posted a net profit of 126.34 billion yen (1.3 billion dollars) for the six months to September, down from 212.42 billion the previous year.

Japanese automakers cut jobs as US sales tumble

Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday it was cutting 780 jobs and a Toyota subsidiary said it was also considering layoffs as part of efforts to cope with a shrinking US market.

Nissan, Japan`s third-largest automaker, will not be renewing contracts for about 40 percent of its 2,000 contract workers at its domestic plants, a company spokeswoman said.

Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday it would cut Japanese production of large and luxury cars meant for export to the United States as demand slows in the world`s largest economy.

'Several factors have led to this decision,' a company statement said, such as 'the global economic crisis which has caused a dramatic decline in the total industry volume.'

PARIS, June 6, 2008 (AFP) - French carmaker Renault and its Japanese partner Nissan said Friday they will build a car plant in the Indian port city of Chennai that will produce about 400,000 cars a year from 2010.
