Biden nominated as Democratic VP pick

DENVER, August 28, 2008 (AFP) - Senator Joseph Biden was Wednesday nominated by popular acclaim at the Democratic convention here to serve as Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.

'The ayes have it,' the convention's chair, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said to huge cheers after no delegates spoke out against the veteran Delaware senator's nomination.

DENVER, August 27, 2008 (AFP) - Democrats on Wednesday made history by nominating Barack Obama as the first black presidential nominee of a major US party.

A state by state roll-call vote was dramatically suspended when Hillary Clinton appeared on the floor of the convention and called for Obama to be nominated by acclamation.

Robinson nominated as new Northern Ireland First Minister

BELFAST, June 5, 2008 (AFP) - The Northern Ireland Assembly on Thursday officially nominated Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Peter Robinson as First Minister of the British province.

The 59-year-old, a Protestant, takes over from 82-year-old Ian Paisley, a firebrand preacher who has led the assembly in Belfast since it resumed business in its current form last year.

President to nominate new Polish PM by end of week: aide

WARSAW, Nov 5, 2007 (AFP) - Polish President Lech Kaczynski will formally nominate pro-business election victor Donald Tusk as prime minister by the end of the week, a presidential aide announced Monday.
