Free Internet unit in talks to buy Alice from Telecommunication Italia

PARIS, June 9, 2008 (AFP) - Iliad, the parent group of French Internet service provider Free said on Monday that it was in exclusive talks with Telecommunication Italia to buy its Internet business Alice.

Iliad said it was prepared to pay up to 800 million euros (1.26 billion dollars), to become the second-biggest provider in France after Orange, overtaking Neuf Cegetel.

Thomson Reuters to axe up to 835 jobs, more losses expected

LONDON, May 19, 2008 (AFP) - The online financial information giant Thomson Reuters has decided to axe up to 835 jobs, a spokeswoman for the group told AFP on Monday, as part of an anticipated wider cull following it recent creation. She said 140 editorial jobs would be lost at the group's Reuters News division by the end of the year.

Yahoo shares gain in Frankfurt on anticipation of Microsoft deal

FRANKFURT, May 19, 2008 (AFP) - Yahoo shares jumped in early trading here on Monday after Microsoft said it was considering a new deal with the second biggest-Internet advertising platform, but not a new takeover bid.

Yahoo showed a gain of 3.04 percent to 18.28 euros (28.48 dollars) in open-market trading.

Thomson Reuters says 140 editorial jobs to go, among other cuts

LONDON, May 19, 2008 (AFP) - The online financial information giant Thomson Reuters has decided to axe 140 editorial positions as part of wider staff cuts, a spokeswoman for the recently formed group said on Monday.

There was no immediate word on the reductions in other areas, but media reports have said the group would probably shed up to 1,500 people across all of its divisions.
