22 dead in Peru after bus careens off cliff

LIMA, Oct 14, 2007 (AFP) - Twenty-two people were killed and more than 15 injured Sunday after a bus traveling in an Andean region of central Peru veered off a steep precipice, police reported.

The accident occurred on narrow, icy roads between the mining town of Morococha and La Oroya when the overcrowded bus that was carrying at least 40 passengers sharply veered to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle, officials said.

Japanese firms to develop copper mines in Peru, Chile: report

TOKYO, Oct 13, 2007 (AFP) - Two Japanese mining firms will invest up to 1.7 billion dollars in jointly developing copper production bases in Peru and Chile to secure supplies amid growing demand worldwide, a report said Saturday.

Nippon Mining and Metals Co. and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. plan to build the facilities by 2011 to produce up to 250,000 tonnes of copper ore a year, the leading business newspaper Nikkei reported.

The project will be undertaken by Pan Pacific Copper Co., a joint copper smelting venture set up by the two firms last year.

Rice urges Congress to pass new free trade deals in Latin America

US Secretary of Defense in Peru on Latin America tour

LIMA, Oct 5, 2007 (AFP) - US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates landed in Lima on Friday for a day-long visit with top Peruvian officials after previously stops in Chile, Colombia and El Salvador.

Gates is scheduled to meet President Alan Garcia, Defense Minister Allan Wagner and other top military officials for talks on security, Peruvian sources said.

Gates kicked off his five-nation tour of Latin America with a stop on Monday in the Salvadoran capital San Salvador. Subsequent stops were unannounced.

Fujimori supporters rally in Lima streets for his release

LIMA, Sept 28, 2007 (AFP) - More than 1,000 supporters of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori squared off with riot police late Thursday demanding his release after he was extradited from Chile and jailed pending corruption and human rights abuses trials.

Peruvian scientists probe fumes from meteorite crater

LIMA, Sept 18, 2007 (AFP) - Scientists on Tuesday investigated a deep crater created by a meteorite strike in southeastern Peru that left 200 villagers sick from powerful fumes emanating from the crash site.

Scores of residents of the farming village of Carancas began vomiting and complaining of headaches and dizziness after the space object struck the area Saturday, creating an eight-meter (26-foot) deep, 20-meter (65-foot) wide crater.

Seven police officers who went to crater were given oxygen taken to hospital after suffering from similar symptoms.
