BANGKOK, Oct 10, 2007 (AFP) - A political dissident arrested over last month's anti-government protests in Myanmar has died after being tortured during interrogation, a Thailand-based watchdog said Wednesday.
Win Shwe, a 42-year-old member of the opposition National League for Democracy, was arrested on September 26 near Myanmar's second city of Mandalay, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said in a statement.
He was arrested along with four other people for joining anti-government protests led by Buddhist monks in Mandalay, the group said.

The director of Gaza's central prison, Ali Hamid, said at a press conference that the 84 prisoners had been sentenced over criminal and security-related charges as well as disturbing public order.

FREETOWN, Aug 9, 2007 (AFP) - Sierra Leone's outgoing President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on Thursday ordered the release of 50 low-risk prisoners who had served most of the sentences in a bid to cut down on overcrowding in jails.
'The president had decided to release prisoners who have spent a substantial part of their time in prison and in any event due for release anytime now,' said Kabbah's office in a statement.
'The release of these prisoners is not only to reduce the congestion in the prisons but is also a farewell gesture of goodwill by the president,' it said.

Minister for penal affairs minister Ashraf Ajrami said Shadi Said Suleiman al-Saidi, 28, died after being transferred from Nafkha prison in Israel's Negev desert to hospital in the southern town of Soroka with a kidney infection.
'We consider this death is due to medical negligence,' Ajrami told a news conference.
