South Africa gets tougher on rapists

CAPE TOWN, Sept 20, 2007 (AFP) - Lawmakers in crime-ridden South Africa approved a bill Thursday making it harder for rapists to argue for reduced sentences.

The Criminal Law Sentencing Amendment Bill bars judges and magistrates from considering a rape victim's sexual history or an apparent lack of physical injury to justify lessening prescribed minimum jail terms.

They are also no longer allowed to take into consideration a convicted rapist's personal or cultural beliefs about rape, or any relationship between the rapist and his victim.

Unable to find interpreter, court drops child rape case

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2007 (AFP) - A judge in Maryland dropped child rape charges against a Liberian-born man because court officials could not find an interpreter for the defendant, court officials said Monday.
