Sri Lankan rebels say freed 22 child soldiers

COLOMBO, March 31, 2008 (AFP) - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers Monday said they had released 22 child soldiers and disputed figures from the United Nations Children's Fund that the rebels still had hundreds of under-age fighters.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said they were also trying to locate families of 20 children still within their ranks.

Sri Lanka says 36 killed in weekend fighting

COLOMBO, March 30, 2008 (AFP) - Fighting between Sri Lankan troops and Tamil Tiger rebels killed 36 combatants in the north, where soldiers were battling tropical illnesses brought on by heavy rains, the military said Sunday.

Emirates quits sharing routes with Sri Lanka's national carrier

COLOMBO, March 30, 2008 (AFP) - Dubai's Emirates Airlines said Sunday it would stop sharing routes with Sri Lanka's national carrier when its decade-long management contract expires this month.

'Code share arrangements between Emirates and SriLankan Airlines will cease from 31st March 2008 with the expiry of the management agreement,' Emirates said in a statement released here.

Sri Lankan director in Indian Tamil trouble

CHENNAI, India, March 30, 2008 (AFP) - A Sri Lankan film-maker has ended up in hospital after making a damning film on the Tamil Tigers and trying to have it processed in a studio in a Tamil-majority region of neighbouring India.

Thushara Peiris was set upon by a furious mob outside Gemini Studios in Chennai, capital of southern Tamil Nadu state, on Monday, witnesses said.

Sri Lanka fighting kills 27 rebels: defence ministry

COLOMBO, March 29, 2008 (AFP) - Sri Lankan security forces killed at least 27 Tamil Tiger rebels during fighting across the island's embattled northern district, the defence ministry said Saturday.

Ground troops advanced further into Mannar on Saturday killing 10 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and smashing two rebel bunkers, the statement said.
