Britain threatens to stop Kenyan army training

LONDON, July 28, 2008 (AFP) - Britain threatened Monday to cut off training for Kenya's military after a television report alleged that a British-trained unit was involved in rapes, beatings and other rights violations.

South Korea bustles with athletes preparing for Beijing Olympics

SEOUL, July 23, 2008 (AFP) - Thousands of Olympic athletes trying to escape Beijing's notorious pollution have set their sights on nearby South Korea for training sessions.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism estimated Wednesday that 3,647 athletes from 59 countries will have trained here before the Games open in the Chinese capital on August 8.

Athletics: New deadline for Kenyan athletes to report

NAIROBI, June 9, 2008 (AFP) - Kenyan athletes were on Monday given two days' notice to report to the pre-Olympic training camps, officials said.

'Anybody who will not be here on Wednesday and will not be training together (with others) should count themselves out of the team,' said Athletics Kenya chief Isaiah Kiplagat.

Football: Teams upset over World Cup stadium training ban

SHANGHAI, Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - Teams competing in the women's World Cup complained Sunday of being banned from training in the main stadium here ahead of key group games.

World champions Germany, who said they were 'honoured' to be chosen to play in the World Cup opening match against Argentina on Monday, admitted to being taken aback by the decision.

'We were amazed by this information that we are not allowed to practise in the stadium,' said team coach Silvia Neid.
