ProSiebenSat.1 posts sales rise but reports new ad model setback

FRANKFURT, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - The German radio and television broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 posted on Wednesday a second-quarter sales increase of 45.4 percent owing to the acquisition of the Luxembourg media group SBS, but said it had suffered from the weak performance of free TV activities.

Broadcaster ITV reports first-half net loss

LONDON, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - ITV, the biggest British commercial television network, said on Wednesday that it made a first-half net loss of 1.537 billion pounds (1.9 billion euros, 3.0 billion dollars) owing to special charges in view of an advertising downturn.

MTG acquires Bulgaria's Nova TV

SOFIA, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - Sweden-based international broadcasting company Modern Times Group (MTG) has signed an agreement to acquire all of Bulgaria's second private TV channel Nova Television for 620 million euros (966 million dollars), Nova said on Thursday.

Disney looking to launch European TV channels

BERLIN, July 3, 2008 (AFP) - The US media and leisure group Disney wants to boost its European presence by launching new television channels to beam Mickey Mouse and friends into millions of homes, a press report said on Thursday.

'We see very large growth potential' in Europe, Disney's head of European television operations John Hardie told the financial daily Handelsblatt.

EU drops court case against Sweden over broadcasting monopoly

BRUSSELS, June 5, 2008 (AFP) - The European Commission dropped on Thursday a court case against Sweden after Stockholm abolished partly state-owned Boxer's monopoly in digital terrestrial broadcasting.

Europe's top competition watchdog had sued Sweden in mid-October 2006 before an EU court for failing to abolish Boxer's monopoly as required by European law.

Swiss reject tougher rules for foreigners: TV

GENEVA, June 1, 2008 (AFP) - The Swiss on Sunday voted to reject a referendum proposal by a far-right party making it harder for foreigners to become naturalised citizens, Swiss TV reported citing first estimates.

Polling closed at midday (1000 GMT), regular practice in Swiss referendums, and results were due to be announced at around 1500 GMT Sunday.
