Australian lesbian blamed for twins

CANBERRA, Sept 20, 2007 (AFP) - A lesbian mother who had two embryos implanted during an IVF procedure told hospital staff very late that she only wanted one, a lawyer for her doctor said Thursday.

In a case seen as the first of its kind in Australia, the mother and her female partner are suing obstetrician Robert Armellin for more than 400,000 dollars (330,000 US) to cover the cost of raising one of the non-identical children, who are now aged three.

Unwanted twin hurt Australian's 'ability to love'

SYDNEY, Sept 19, 2007 (AFP) - A lesbian who had twins through IVF but only wanted one child had lost some of her ability to love as a result, her partner told an Australian court Wednesday.

In the first case of its kind in the country, the couple are seeking damages from their doctor after one of the women was implanted with two embryos instead of one as requested and subsequently gave birth to twin baby girls.

Slovak surgical team separates conjoined twins

BRATISLAVA, Sept 15, 2007 (AFP) - Slovak doctors said Saturday that they had successfully completed a marathon operation to separate five-month-old conjoined twins who were joined at the chest.

The operation on Michal and Marek took the 46-person surgical team at the Childrens' Faculty Hospital in Bratislava almost 20 hours, with the boys under anaesthetic for 22 hours.

'We won the surgical battle,' consultant Jaroslav Siman said at news conference on Saturday, adding that the twins were still not out of danger following the risky operation.

Double trouble and more at twins convention in France

PLEUCADEUC, France, Aug 15, 2007 (AFP) - Two was certainly not a crowd at the 14th annual 'Two and More' festival in western France on Wednesday, as around 1,000 French and foreign twins met up to celebrate their duality.

Hundreds of pairs of identical cyclists, farmers, students, and retirees came together for the two-day event at the little town of Pleucadeuc in Brittany, Europe's self-proclaimed 'twin capital.'

US doctors call off conjoined twin surgery

WASHINGTON, Aug 13, 2007 (AFP) - US doctors have called off their attempt to separate three-year-old conjoined twin girls who are fused at the head because the operation is too risky, the hospital said Monday.

'Further surgery is not in the best interest of the Dogaru twins,' the medical team at University Hospitals Case Medical Center Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio said in a statement.
