Formula One: Kovalainen wins Hungarian Grand Prix

BUDAPEST, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen, of McLaren-Mercedes, recorded his first career victory at the Hunarian Grand Prix here on Sunday.

Kovalainen took advantage of Ferrari's Felipe Massa's misfortune when the Brazilian, who had lead from the start pulled up with engine problems with just three laps to go.

Cricket: India beat Sri Lanka to square Test series

GALLE, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - India beat Sri Lanka by 170 runs on the fourth day of the second Test at the Galle International Stadium here on Sunday to square the three-match series 1-1.

Sri Lanka, who won the opening match by an innings and 239 runs in Colombo, were dismissed for 136 in their second innings chasing a 307-run target.

Rallying: Loeb wins Rally of Finland

JYVASKYLA, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - France's Sebastien Loeb, driving a Citroen C4, won the Rally of Finland here on Sunday, the ninth of the 15-event World Rally Championship.

The four-time world champion finished nine seconds ahead of Finland's Mikko Hirvonen in a Ford Focus, with Australia's Chris Atkinson finishing third three minutes off the pace in a Subaru Impreza.

Cricket: South Africans clinch series with Smith ton

BIRMINGHAM, August 2, 2008 (AFP) - South African captain Graeme Smith made a magnificent century to lead his team to a series-clinching victory on the fourth day of the third Test against England at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Smith made an unbeaten 154 as South Africa won by five wickets to take a winning 2-0 lead in the four-Test series.

Cycling: Steegmans wins Tour's last stage

PARIS, July 27, 2008 (AFP) - Belgian Gert Steegmans of the Quick Step team won the final stage of the Tour de France here on Sunday.

Steegmans claimed his second career stage win on the race, but his first on the Champs Elysees, in timely fashion having failed to challenge the peloton's fast men during three weeks of intense racing.

Cycling: Sastre crowned Tour de France champion

PARIS, July 27, 2008 (AFP) - Spain's Carlos Sastre wrapped up his his maiden Tour de France triumph here on Sunday following the final stage of the race into Paris.

Sastre, a 33-year-old climbing specialist who rides for the CSC team, became the eighth Spaniard to win the race's yellow jersey and the third consecutively after Oscar Pereiro (2006) and Alberto Contador (2007).

Cycling: Chavanel wins 19th stage, Sastre retains lead

MONTLUCON, July 25, 2008 (AFP) - France's Sylvain Chavanel, riding for the Cofidis team, won Friday's 19th stage of the Tour de France between Roanne and Montlucon.

Spaniard Carlos Sastre (CSC) retained the leader's yellow jersey.

'I wouldn't have believed it this morning. Last night I had a problem with my back and I couldn't move,' said Chavanel.

Cycling: Sastre still in yellow as Burghardt wins 18th stage

ST ETIENNE, July 24, 2008 (AFP) - Spaniard Carlos Sastre of the CSC team retained the overall leader's yellow jersey after German Marcus Burghardt of the Columbia team won the 18th stage of the Tour de France here on Thursday.

Burghardt edged out Carlos Barredo of Spain as he won a 196.5 km ride from Bourg-d'Oisans to Saint-Etienne, crossing the line in 4hr 30min 21sec.
