Berlin to compensate Hungarian Holocaust survivors: group

BUDAPEST, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - The German government has agreed to pay 12.3 million euros (19 million dollars) to about 6,500 Jewish survivors of the Nazi occupation of Budapest, an international Jewish organisation said Wednesday.

Israeli envoy slams priest for Croatian WWII camp chief's funeral eulogy

ZAGREB, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - Israel's ambassador to Croatia on Thursday criticised a local Catholic priest who paid tribute to a World War II concentration camp commander when conducting his funeral.

'I strongly condemn the inadequate words of the priest who conducted the funeral, who pronounced (Dinko) Sakic a role model for Croats,' ambassador Shmuel Meirom said in statement.

WWII bomb scare forces hotel evacuation in Poland

WARSAW, July 29, 2008 (AFP) - A massive bomb dating from the Second World War on Tuesday forced the evacuation of a hotel and several homes in southwest Poland, police said.

Construction workers in Wroclaw discovered the explosive in the city centre, police spokesman Wojciech Wybraniec said, according to the Polish PAP news agency.
