South African unions endorse Zuma as next ANC leader

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 20, 2007 (AFP) - Jacob Zuma's presidential ambitions received a major boost Thursday when South Africa's top union organisation endorsed the ANC deputy president to become the ruling party's next leader.

Zwelinzima Vavi, general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), a junior partner in the governing coalition, said a resolution passed at a central committee meeting would act as a guide to its members in December's election for the next president of the African National Congress (ANC).
