Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki thanked Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito Thursday for his country's support in programmes to combat climate change, the government said. The prince arrived in Nairobi late Wednesday for a three-day trip that follows a visit to Ghana. Kibaki hailed Japan's "continued financial and technical support" notably in programmes to combat climate change, a statement from his office said.

Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan on Sunday began a three-day official visit to Ghana at the head of a 30-strong delegation. He was welcomed at Kotoka international airport by Vice President John Dramani Mahama to traditional Ashanti drumming and dance, an AFP reporter saw. The visit is at the invitation of Ghana and is aimed at boosting ties between the two countries, officials said.

The discovery of oil reserves off the coast of Ghana has kicked off a row with Ivory Coast which is claiming part of its neighbour's maritime area, a Ghanaian minister said Friday. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation announced last month the discovery of an "extensive deepwater petroleum province" offshore Ghana.

Ghana's President John Atta Mills said Thursday his government will soon submit a bill on using oil revenues to boost growth and infrastructure, as the country prepares to become Africa's latest oil producer. "Ghana is preparing an oil and gas revenue management bill to be submitted to the parliament for approval," he told lawmakers while presenting his state of the nation address.

Nigerian authorities on Monday charged 17 people with stealing more than 700 tonnes of crude oil, the country's anti-graft agency said. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said the suspects, including two Ghanaians, were charged with "conspiracy and illegal oil bunkering (stealing). "The hearing at a Nigerian federal high court refused the suspects bail and remanded them in prison until the case resumes on March 9.

Ghana is chopping its benchmark interest rate by two percentage points to 16. 0 percent in response to easing inflation, central bank governor Kwesi Amissah Arthur said Friday. "We expect that the declining rate of inflation should continue as the cedi (Ghana's national currency) continues to stabilise against its international peers and investor confidence in the Ghanaian economy is soaring," he said.

Cairo erupted with joy on Sunday after the national football team's 1-0 triumph over Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations final that secured Egypt's third successive championship on the continent. A huge roar rose over the teeming Egyptian capital as national hero Mohammed "Gedo" Nagy scored in the 85th minute, clinching victory for the Pharaohs in the final played in the Angolan capital.
