11 dead in Cameroon road accident: rescue services

YAOUNDE, Sept 18, 2008 (AFP) - A truck hit a bus in southwest Cameroon on Thursday killing 11 people and injuring two others, rescue services said.

The bus was headed towards Douala, the economic capital, carrying 13 people when it was hit by the truck which had reeled off course, an emergency official said.

Nigeria says Bakassi handover still on track

ABUJA, August 1, 2008 (AFP) - Nigeria's scheduled August 14 handover of the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon remains on track, despite a court order to delay the move, the president's office says.

'Our country has a commitment to handover the peninsula by August 14 and so far nothing has changed,' said presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi.

Nigerian court poses legal obstacle to Bakassi handover

ABUJA, July 31, 2008 (AFP) - A Nigerian court on Thursday granted an injunction preventing Nigeria handing over the oil-rich peninsula of Bakassi to Cameroon by August 14 in line with a ruling of the world court.

'The justice of this case is that parties to this suit should maintain the status quo...'judge Mohammed Umar said in a federal court ruling in Abuja.

YAOUNDE, July 24, 2008 (AFP) - Twelve people, including two Cameroonian soldiers, were killed Thursday in a new attack by an armed gang in the oil rich west of the country close to the Nigerian border, the defence minister said.

Cameroon hikes rice price by up to 21 percent despite riots

YAOUNDE, June 9, 2008 (AFP) - Prices for two of Cameroon's most popular rice varieties have risen by 15 and 21 percent respectively, a government statement said Monday, three months after food riots left at least 40 people dead.

In the capital Yaounde 'Type 25 percent' rice rose 15 percent to 335 CFA francs (0.51 euros/0.80 dollars) a kilo from 291 CFA francs.

Cameroon Air suspended from payment system: IATA

GENEVA, April 16, 2008 (AFP) - Financially troubled Cameroon Airlines has been suspended from a ticket compensation scheme operated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), an IATA spokesman said Wednesdsay.

'He is safe,' said the diplomat, who asked not to be named. 'The Cameroonian authorities have agreed to take him in ... It's possible he will go to France.'
