A Croatian court on Friday sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the murder of the daughter of a prominent lawyer which shocked the country amid a wave of mafia style attacks in the city. The Zagreb municipal court found Mladen Slogar guilty of "first degree murder committed out of ruthless revenge," the state-run HINA news agency reported.
Croatia's efforts in dealing with war crimes cases are insufficient and the country lacks the political will to efficiently handle them, human rights groups said on Thursday. Croatian farmers stepped up Sunday a seven-day-long protest against the decrease of government subsidies by blocking roads in the east of the country, national radio reported. Farmers blocked traffic with tractors on several regional roads in the largely agricultural east, mainly around the towns of Osijek, Vinkovci and Djakovo, it said.
Montenegro on Thursday cancelled a contract signed last year with a Croatian company to build a highway linking its coast to the northern border with Serbia, the government said. The deal with the Konstruktor firm was revoked as the Croatian company failed to provide financial guarantees before an agreed deadline, Transport Minister Andrija Lompar told reporters.
